Ways to Help

Guiding Eyes for the Blind was founded in 1954. Since that time, we have graduated more than 6,000 guide dog teams. Our graduates have come from 48 states and 12 countries. Their experiences at the school and with our guide dogs have earned us a reputation as one of the foremost guide dog schools in the world.

We provide our dogs, and all of our training and support services, as well as transportation to students free of charge. We do not receive any government support but rely upon the generosity of individuals, corporations, foundations, and civic groups to fund our work. It costs approximately $45,000 to graduate one guide dog team, and we are deeply grateful to our supporters for their commitment to our mission.

Guiding Eyes for the Blind maintains two facilities. Our Canine Development Center is located in Patterson, New York and is responsible for the breeding colony and puppies from birth until approximately 18 months of age.

At approximately 16-18 months of age, dogs on program are brought back to our Headquarters located in Yorktown Heights, New York to be evaluated if they do, in fact, possess the superior skills necessary to become a successful guide dog. If so, these dogs then enter our formal Guide Dog Training Program.
